Meet the Roberts Family

Fun in work and life is where it’s at for Laura Roberts and her family.

This family feature takes us to Hawaii, zooming in for a closer look at all of the interesting activities that the Roberts family creates time for by choosing to enroll in Kaupe’a Virtual Learning supported by Venture Upward. Micah (11), Izzy (13) Fierra (15), Asa (20), and parents Adam and Laura are definitely loving learning. Having lived in Montana for all of their lives until moving to Hawaii almost 10 years ago, they say, “We don’t miss the cold, but do miss our relatives.” Venture Upward’s flexibility allows for enjoying the beach, hiking, and embarking on good adventures. They also love traveling whenever they have the chance. Izzy loves woodworking and leatherworking, Micah enjoys reading and playing video games, Fierra likes drawing and hiking, and Asa is focused on working on his house, building things, and going to the beach. Izzy and Fierra work for a local coffee farm, while Asa does construction work. Fierra is pursuing early college through Hilo Community College, working towards her concentration in arts degree. As parents, Adam and Laura are self-employed and always busy. They run an Airbnb on their property, a fiber art business that ships worldwide, and take on other side jobs. They also operate a nonprofit aimed at improving their local park for the community. The Roberts family can be pretty silly, enjoying fun and laughter together. Each year, instead of taking a standard family photo, they dress in a theme, exploring all sorts of ideas. “This last year’s photo was raver. It was fun!”

Home Education:

The Roberts family are home-educating pros, having done so since Asa was in preschool! They chose this path for several reasons. “The first and foremost is that we would be able to learn the things we wanted to learn. Also, very important to us is the fact that we have such a short window of time with our kids before they grow up. We wanted to spend as much time with them as we could. It is so rewarding to watch them learn and things click in their brains.” Each day looks different for the family because Adam and Laura are both working parents. Their children engage in a lot of independent learning. Some days are fully dedicated to work, while other days focus on school. “Sometimes school gets done on a Saturday or Sunday if the week is really busy, or it may be in the evening. We always fit it in, and we are thankful for home educating because it works around our ever changing schedule.”
